When should children get their first orthodontic check-up?
The AAO (American Association of Orthodontists) recommends that your child get a check-up with an orthodontist at the first recognition of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age seven. By then, your child has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to determine whether an orthodontic problem exists or is developing.
The purpose of this first visit is to establish a baseline and to determine if early intervention is needed. We also note any particular areas of concern that we will recommend putting a “watch” on.
At your child’s first orthodontic visit it may be necessary to take some pictures. These digital radiographs will show our team how the teeth are positioned and whether there are teeth that haven’t yet come in.
At Nakisher Orthodontics, we usually won’t put braces on until most of the adult teeth are in. However, some early treatment may be necessary. For example, if the upper jaw is too narrow or requires more space for teeth to properly align, a palatal expander may be used. This appliance widens the upper jaw with gentle pressure over a period of time.
Putting off a check-up with an orthodontist until a child has lost all baby teeth could be a disservice. Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they are found early. A check-up no later than age 7 gives your orthodontist the opportunity to recommend the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time. If early treatment is in order, the orthodontist may be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
There is no charge for this first visit and no referral letter is required. If no treatment is indicated at this initial consultation, we will schedule periodic follow-ups to monitor your child. As your child grows, we will make appropriate recommendations at that time.
